CHURCH OF IRELAND NOTES
For Saturday 5 December 1998
Help Sought for Carnalway Church
Church of Ireland parish churches can, on occasion,
exhibit a surprisingly high degree of architectural and decorative
sophistication. One such is St Patrick's Church, Carnalway, in the
Newbridge union of parishes in Co. Kildare, which is in need of
extensive repair to ensure its preservation. A major restoration
programme to correct serious structural faults is underway. The
parishioners have already spent £13,500 on the conservation of the
church and have set aside a further £15,000, but if this important
project is to be completed they will need help.
The church has been appraised by the Department of
Arts, Heritage, the Gaeltacht and the Islands which has accepted that it
is a building of architectural significance with important decorative
features. St Patrick's was extensivley restored just over one hundred
years ago, in the Hiberno-Romanesque style, by the eminent architect,
James Franklin Fuller. It contains stained glass by Harry Clarke and Sir
Ninian Comper; a 1798 monument to Captain Charles Cooke (the only Irish
work by the great English sculptor, Charles Regnants); and fine mosaic
work and marble facing on the interior walls.
A Heritage Committee has been formed, representative
of the parishioners and the wider local community, and all financial
support would be welcome. The secretary of the Committee is Mr. Humphrey
Thompson, Gibbinstown House, Dunlavin, Co. Wicklow and the rector of the
parish is the Revd Dr. John Marsden, The Rectory, Newbridge.
Today (Saturday) in St Mary's Cathedral, Tuam, there
will be a Service of Thanksgiving for the life of Bob Burke who served
with CMS in Kenya, Nigeria and the Yemen. The preacher will be Canon
Raymond Smith. In Dublin, the Friends of St Patrick's Cathedral will
have a Christmas Celebration with music, readings and poetry.
Tomorrow (Sunday) the Bishop of Cork, the Rt. Revd
Roy Warke, will be the celebrant at a Eucharist to mark the 150th
anniversary of the consecration of Kilmurry Church. The preacher will be
Canon Robert Warren, Rector of Tralee, who is a descendant of Sir
Augustus Warren whose generosity made the building of the church
possible. In St Anne's Cathedral, Belfast there will be a Service of
Praise and Thanksgiving for Marie Curie Cancer Care which is fifty years
old. Festal Evensong for St Nicholas' Day will be sung in St Nicholas'
Collegiate Church, Galway where the Revd Michael Graham, Rector of
Drogheda, will preach before the Mayor of Galway, and where the blessing
will be given by the Bishop of Galway, In Monkstown parish church Dun
Laoghaire Choral Society will present "Messiah for All".
The Representative Church Body will meet in the
Church of Ireland College of Education, Rathmines, Dublin on Wednesday
afternoon while in the evening there will be a Christmas Concert in St
Patrick's Church, Greystones featuring Barbara Dagg (organ and piano)
and Henry Dagg (musical saw).
A seasonal innovation in Christ Church Cathedral,
Dublin has been the installation of a moving crib which is on view each
Monday to Saturday before Christmas and every day from Christmas to
Candlemas. Sunday schools, day schools and children of all ages are
welcome. The contents of the donation box will be given to the Christmas
work of the Salvation Army and St. Vincent de Paul.
A society of Friends of the Bolton Library was
recently launched in Cashel. The event included an organ recital by the
Dean of Cashel, a poetry reading by the Dean of Waterford and talks on
the Library by Mrs. Mary Woodworth and Mr. George Cunningham, chairman
of the Library's Board of Management. Details of the Friends may be had
from the Dean of Cashel, Dr. Phillip Knowles, the Deanery, Cashel, Co.
Tipperary.
