Memorial Service for Archbishop McAdoo
A memorial service for the former Archbishop of
Dublin, Dr Henry McAdoo, will be held in Christ Church Cathedral,
Dublin, tomorrow (Sunday). The service will be in the context of
Evensong sung by the Cathedral Choir, under the direction of Mark Duley,
and the preacher will be the Bishop of Meath and Kildare, the Most Revd
Dr Richard Clarke.
Following his death, on 10 December, there have been
many tributes to the life and witness of Dr McAdoo. The most striking,
perhaps, was the attendance of President McAleese at the funeral service
in Dalkey parish church, emphasising that Dr MacAdoo was not only a
significant figure in the life of the Church but also of the nation,
while the presence of the Bishop of Portsmouth, Dr Kenneth Stevenson, as
the representative of the Archbishop of Canterbury, spoke eloquently of
Dr McAdoo's contribution to the Anglican Communion. Subsequent
obituaries in The Church Times pointed up other aspects of his life. Dr
Donald Caird, his predecessor as Archbishop of Dublin, wrote of his
unique contribution to the Church of Ireland and the Revd Dr Henry
Chadwick, a member of ARCIC I, of which Dr McAdoo was co-chairman, noted
his convinced and sustained contribution to ecumenism in the world wide
Church.
At the service tomorrow (Sunday) many will remember
Dr McAdoo in the particular context in which they knew him parish
priest, dean, bishop, archbishop; punctilious administrator, wise
counsellor, pastoral presence; illuminating preacher, brilliant scholar.
More personally, of course, his family and friends will remember the man
who touched their lives in so many ways.
Tomorrow (Sunday) RTE will broadcast Morning Service
from the Church of St John the Baptist, Clontarf, where the rector is
the Revd Tom Haskins. In the afternoon in St Patrick's Cathedral,
Dublin, the Epiphanytide Processions will present a celebration of the
Glory of Christ with hymns and music sung by the Cathedral Choir, under
the direction of John Dexter. Scripture passages will be read by the
well known RTE newsreaders, Bryan Dobson and Ken Hammond.
On Monday lecture term begins in the Church of
Ireland Theological College. In Trinity College Chapel services resume
with the Daily Offices at 9.15 am and 5.15 pm. And the first Choral
Evensong of Hilary Term will be on Thursday at 5.15 pm. The College
Chaplain, Dr Alan McCormack, extends a warm welcome to any who may wish
to attend and especially to visitors to the College.
On Thursday evening the Choir of Christ Church
Cathedral, Dublin will sing in the "Winter Warmers at the National
Gallery" series of seasonal music events. The programme will
include music by Bach, Poulenc, Bruckner, Verdi and Rachmaninov In
addition the choir will sing works by Tallis, Rutter and Wood on the
theme of light in celebration of de Coster's painting Man singing by
Candlelight. The concert begins in the National Gallery, Merrion Square
at 7.15 pm.
On Friday the Archbishop of Armagh, Dr Robin Eames,
will be in Dublin where he will speak at the UCD Literary and Historical
Society on the topic "Ireland - the Way Ahead". The
Representative Church Body Library will remain open until 7.30 pm.
The beginning of 1999 brings a number of clerical
changes in the diocese of Dublin. The Revd John McCullagh leaves the
incumbency of Clondalkin to become Education Officer in Church House,
the Revd Ian Poulton has been instituted as Rector of Ballybrack and his
wife, the Revd Katherine Poulton, is to be curate of Greystones, while
Canon Kenneth Kearon will shortly leave Tullow to become Director of the
Irish School of Ecumenics.
