Historical Society Meets in Armagh
Today (Saturday) the spring meeting of the Church of Ireland
Historical Society will be held in the elegant eighteenth century
surroundings of Archbishop Robinson's Library in Armagh. The first
morning session will feature a paper from Dr David Hayton, who lectures
in the modern history department of Queen's University, Belfast, on 'The
influence of the High Church clergy in the early 18th century'. After
coffee Dr Rowina Dudley will discuss her research into the
administration of Dublin parishes in the late 17th century which was
largely based on the incomparable riches of the records of the Dublin
city parishes in the Representative Church Body Library. After lunch Dr
Ruth Whelan, Professor of French in NUI-Maynooth, will speak on 'A life
in exile - the French Dean of Killaloe - Jacques Abadie'. Details of the

Today (Saturday) in St Fin Barre's cathedral the new Bishop of Cork,
the Rt. Revd Paul Colton, will be enthroned by the Dean of Cork, Dr
Michael Jackson, after which Bishop Colton will preach his first sermon
the cathedral as a bishop. The Roman Catholic Bishop of Cork, Dr John
Buckley, will lead ecumenical representatives from the Cork churches and
the city and county will be represented by the Lord Mayor of Cork and
the Cathaoirleach of Cork County Council.
In St Asaph's cathedral, North Wales, a former Bishop of Cork, Dr
Samuel Poyntz, will represent the Church of Ireland bishops at the
consecration of the Ven. A.E. Pierce as Bishop of Swansea and Brecon.
Tomorrow (Sunday) RTE will televise Morning Service with the
congregation of St Patrick's Church, Greystones, where the rector is the
Archdeacon of Glendalough, the Ven. Edgar Swann. The Archbishop of
Armagh, Dr Robin Eames, will preach in St Mark's Church, Dundela, at a
Service of Thanksgiving for the completion of restoration work while in
the Chapel of Trinity College, Dublin, the preacher will be the Rector
of Antrim, Dr Steven McBride.
The Archbishops of Armagh and Dublin have requested that special collections
should be made in churches throughout the county tomorrow (Sunday) for
the relief of distress in the Balkans. The Bishops' Appeal has released
£10,000 as an immediate response to this humanitarian crisis and
further donations may be made to The Secretary, Bishops' Appeal,
Representative Church Body, Church House, Royal Hospital, Bloomfield
Avenue, Donnybrook, Dublin 4.
On Wednesday the Bishop of Limerick and Killaloe, the Rt. Revd Edward
Darling, will institute the Revd Arthur Minion to the incumbency of
Shinrone in succession to the Revd Brendan Haythornthwaite who has
retired. In St Columb's Cathedral, Derry, the Revd Raymond Stewart,
Rector of Castledawson, will be installed as a canon. The Chaplain of
Trinity College, Dublin, Dr Alan McCormack, will be in Belfast where he
will speak on 'The Church of Ireland in the next Millennium' at a
meeting of the joint Christian chaplaincies in Queen's University.
In Dublin on Thursday evening there will be a forum on 'Genetic
Engineering Explained' in the Parish Centre, St Brigid's Church,
Stillorgan.
The Representative Church Body will return
to Church of Ireland House, Rathmines, on 4 May. To facilitate the
removal from Donnybrook the office will be closed for business from
Thursday 29 April until Tuesday 4 May inclusive. However, due to the
transfer and re-establishment of some equipment from Donnybrook to
Rathmines it is possible that full working conditions may be affected on
Wednesday 28 April and Wednesday 5 May. Telephone, fax and e-mail
numbers will be unaffected by the move.
