Church of Ireland Historical Society Meets in Dublin

Today (Saturday) the Church of Ireland Historical Society will meet in Christ Church Cathedral, Dublin, beginning with coffee at 10.30 am.

The first paper will be given by Dr Colm Lennon, Senior Lecturer in Modern History in NUI-Maynooth, who will speak on "Dublin Protestant Families before 1641". Dr Lennon is the leading expert on Dublin families in the early modern period as was readily demonstrated by his incisive contribution to the introduction of the Registers of Christ Church Cathedral, Dublin which was published last year.

Immediately before lunch the "Research Spot" will be occupied by Canon John Crawford, Vicar of the St Patrick's Cathedral Group of Parishes, who will speak on "Aspects of the Church of Ireland in Victorian Dublin". This will draw on his on-going research into the city's trustee churches.

After lunch the Principal of the Church of Ireland Theological College, Canon John Bartlett, will talk about Richard Pococke, an 18th century Church of Ireland bishop, who was an obsessive traveller not only in Ireland and Europe but also in Egypt and the Middle East.

Details of membership of the Church of Ireland Historical Society may be had from the Revd Dr W.G. Neely, The Rectory, 3 Crossmore Road, Keady, Co. Armagh.

Tomorrow (Sunday) RTE will broadcast a studio service for Remembrance Sunday which will be conducted by the Bishop of Tuam, Dr Richard Henderson. In Christ Church Cathedral, Dublin, there will be a liturgical performance of Fauré's Requiem, while in the Chapel of Trinity College the Remembrance Sunday preacher will be the former Dean of St Patrick's, Dr Victor Griffin. The Bishop of Limerick and Killaloe, the Rt Revd Edward Darling, will be in St Mary's Church, Nenagh, where he will preach and dedicate a memorial tablet to the late Archdeacon Eric Stanley. In St Nicholas' Collegiate Church, Galway, choral evensong will be sung by the choirs of St Nicholas' Collegiate Church and St Nicholas' Cathedral. This is an initiative of the two Directors of Music, the Revd Tom Gordon and Mr Ray O'Donnell.

On Monday evening in Church of Ireland House, Dublin, Mr Seamus Brennan T.D., Chairman of the National Millennium Committee, will launch the APCK contribution to the millennium, A Time to Build. Essays for Tomorrow's Church, which has been edited by the Dean of Raphoe, Dr Stephen White.

The Standing Committee of the General Synod and the Executive Committee of the Representative Church Body will meet in Church of Ireland House on Tuesday where the bishops will meet on Wednesday.

On Wednesday the patronal festival of St Doulagh's Church, Balgriffin, will be celebrated at 8.00 pm when the preacher will be the Revd Ken Sherwood, priest-in-charge of St Laserian's Cathedral, Old Leighlin, and formerly auxiliary priest in Malahide and Balgriffin.

The Friends of Down Cathedral will celebrate the Feast of St Cecilia with an evening of music in the cathedral on Thursday, while in Trinity College, Dublin, Dr Linda Hogan, University of Leeds, will speak on "Christian Ethics and Cross Cultural Moral Debate" in the "Theology at the Turn of the Millennium" lecture series. In St Mary's parish room, Navan, at 8.00 pm the second session in the winter term of the Meath and Kildare Diocesan Adult Education Programme will be held. The winter term consists of workshops with members of the Travelling Community, and details may be had from the Revd Olive Donohoe, The Rectory, Mountmellick.

Next Saturday, 20 November, there will be a Diocesan Junior Choral Day in Christ Church Cathedral, Dublin. Young people, aged 8-14, who are interested in participating should contact Ms Siobhan Kilkelly at 01-6604349.
