Joint Theological Working Party
of
The Church of Ireland and the Methodist Church in Ireland
July 2001
To all clergy and ministers
Dear Brothers and Sisters,
As Co-Chairmen of the Joint Theological Working Party of the Church of
Ireland and the Methodist Church in Ireland, we commend the revised draft covenant document to
you and to your congregations. A number of changes have been made to the
first draft, primarily in the interests of clarity. These have been based on
the responses received by the Working Party last year.
At the recent meetings of the General Synod of the Church of Ireland and
of the Conference of the Methodist Church in Ireland, there were useful and
lively debates on this document. Both Synod and Conference agreed that the
churches be encouraged to continue this journey of exploration together.
Synod and Conference further urged
- that opportunities be created at local and other levels which will
enable members of each denomination to listen to and understand the
practices and beliefs of the other.
- that congregations avail of every opportunity to work and worship
together
On behalf of the members of the Joint Theological Working Party, we would
urge you to further the good and productive work of last year. In particular
we hope that you will have opportunity to discuss the covenant with members
of the other church and to consider sending any observations you may wish to
share with us to the Secretary.
Yours sincerely in Christ,
(signed)

Harold Miller (Bishop of Down and Dromore)
