Christ Church Bells set new World Record
On Saturday, 6 November 1999, 19 bell-ringers set a world record in
Christ Church Cathedral, Dublin, at 4.00 pm when they rang, together,
all 19 bells now in place in the tower.
The establishment of this world record follows the installation of
seven new bells to mark the new millennium in addition to the peal of 12
bells already there.
The ringing of the record was shared by ringers from all over Ireland
and was part of a day of celebration to mark the acquisition of the new
bells.
Christ Church Cathedral is the first cathedral or church to have a
ringing peal of 16 bells plus three semi-tone bells. Each bell, which
rings full-circle, is controlled by a rope called a ‘sally,’ pulled
by a ringer who is in the room below the swinging bells.
The cathedral acquired the new bells, not just for the millennium
but also to provide a light ring of eight bells for young ringers. The
existing cathedral bells, with a 2.5 ton tenor, are too heavy for
beginners who quickly become disheartened if they cannot achieve smooth
ringing. |
