Archbishop Robin Eames has just celebrated the 25th anniversary of
his consecration as a bishop. To mark the occasion his clerical
colleagues in the Diocese of Armagh and their wives met with the
Archbishop's family in St Patrick's Cathedral, Armagh, on St. Columba's
Day, 9 June, for a celebration of the Holy Communion. The Archbishop was
the celebrant and the service was also attended by many retired clergy
of the diocese.
After the service a reception was held in the Market Place Theatre
and Arts Centre in Armagh. The Archdeacon of Armagh, the Venerable
Raymond Hoey, paid warm tribute to the Archbishop's outstanding gifts
and personal qualities. He mentioned especially his work for
reconciliation and peace, and his care and comfort for the bereaved and
injured, stating that Archbishop Eames 'brought hope in many a dark
hour'. Suitable gifts were presented to the Archbishop.
A celebratory cake, decorated with the crests of the dioceses where
the Archbishop has served, was cut and distributed at the reception. The
Archbishop was consecrated Bishop of Derry and Raphoe on 9 June 1975. He
was elected Bishop of Down and Dromore on 23 April 1980 and on 7
February 1986 was elected Archbishop of Armagh and Primate of all
Ireland and Metropolitan.
As well as his responsibilities as diocesan bishop and as Primate of
the Church of Ireland, Archbishop Eames, who is aged 63, holds important
offices within the Anglican Communion and has been Chairman of the
Archbishop of Canterbury's Commission on 'Communion on Women and the
Episcopate'.
The Archbishop is married to a lawyer, Christine, who holds the
prestigious position of Worldwide President of the Mothers' Union. They
have two sons, Niall, a surgeon, and Michael, also a doctor. In the
little amount of spare time which the Archbishop manages to find, he
enjoys the company of his three grandchildren. His hobbies include
sailing, reading and painting.
