STATEMENT FROM THE MOST REV DR ROBIN EAMES
ARCHBISHOP OF ARMAGH, PRIMATE OF ALL IRELAND
ON THE CURRENT POLITICAL IMPASSE
IN NORTHERN IRELAND

At this time of genuine difficulties for our political leaders I am convinced that the vast majority of people throughout Ireland long to see signs of hope that a way forward can emerge. Hope is essential to the building of confidence across the community. Trust is once again the real casualty of events. At this stage in our history people need to see signs of hope and confidence that a way towards political stability is not just possible but attainable. Negative rhetoric does nothing to produce confidence and trust. Beyond the details of disagreement there is an urgent need for doors to remain open for political progress. In the light of the years of suffering in Northern Ireland there is a moral imperative for politicians to keep those doors open and for them to know the vast majority want them to strive yet again to find a way forward. Hope must not be allowed to die.
