On the first St. Patrick's Day of the new millennium,
pilgrims from the Diocese of Down and Dromore will be recreating the
ancient tradition of pilgrimage from Saul to Down Cathedral.
Following a service of Holy Communion at Saul Church at 9.30 a.m.
the pilgrimage will set off for the Cathedral (35 minutes walk). Stopping
en route to bury a time capsule, the pilgrims will arrive at Down
Cathedral in time for the Festival Service at 11.30 a.m. where the
preacher will be the Very Revd John Dunlop, former Moderator of the
Presbyterian Church in Ireland.
After the service the Bishop of Down and Dromore, the Rt. Revd Harold
Miller, will lay a wreath on St. Patrick's Grave.
In the afternoon Bishop Miller will take part in the parade in
Downpatrick, accompanied by the Roman Catholic Auxiliary Bishop of Down
and Connor, the Most Revd Anthony Farquhar.
It is expected that representatives from every parish in the diocese
will take part in the pilgrimage and buses will take people from Down
Cathedral to Saul, running between 8.45 a.m. And 9.45 a.m. (car parking is
available along the Mall leading to the Cathedral in Downpatrick). |
