The Archbishop of Dublin, the Most Revd. Dr. Walton Empey, sent the following message of sympathy to the Minister for Defence, Mr. Michael Smith, TD, and to the Chief ­of-Staff, Gen. David Stapleton:

"I am very distressed to hear of the dreadful accident in the Lebanon and I send you and your colleagues my deepest sympathy. I know from my visits to the Lebanon the wonderful service given by the Army in this strife-torn land. Their courage, dedication and patience has earned respect throughout the world. Please pass on my deepest condolences to the families of the bereaved and my good wishes and prayers to the injured and their families."
