The following draft resolution was adopted by the Standing Committee at its meeting in March 1998:

" (a) That a group consisting of a Chairman, two members from the Northern Province and two members from the Southern Province be appointed to co-ordinate millennium events throughout the Church of Ireland.

(b) That the Honorary Secretaries be requested to submit names for the co-ordinating group for consideration by the Standing Committee at its April 1998 meeting.

(c) That the Priorities Fund be requested to provide funding of IR£5,000 towards the expenses of the co-ordinating committee in order to avail of similar funding from the RCB Executive Committee.

(d) That in consultation with the Archbishops of Armagh and Dublin, the group convene a meeting of interested parties including representatives of the Bishops’ Appeal Committee and the Council for the Church Overseas, to co-ordinate policy."

The Millennium Co-ordination Committee has concentrated on two aspects of this resolution:

    CO-ORDINATION OF MILLENNIUM EVENTS

The Committee sees this task as being fulfilled by gathering information from the Church of Ireland at every level about millennium events and plans. It is intended to publish a Millennium Newsletter to create the widest possible availability of information. It is also hoped to make use of the Church of Ireland Website.

In February, the Millennium Committee appointed Ms Jennifer Byrne as Administrative Officer to the Committee. She will assist the Millennium Committee in its task of gathering and disseminating information on millennium events. She will also be responsible for the production of the Newsletter.

The Committee also sees a role in creating cohesion in the celebration of the Millennium - for example, in attempting to develop an accepted pattern for parishes in their liturgical celebration of the event. A folder of liturgical resources for use in parishes has been developed by Canon Paul Colton at the request of the Liturgical Advisory Committee.

The Committee is also involved in the development of inter-church aspects of the celebration of the Millennium. It is likely that these will include a National Service on 2 January 2000 and an inter-church focus on the celebration of Pentecost 2000.

    CO-ORDINATION OF POLICY

The Committee has consulted with representatives of the Bishops’ Appeal Committee and the Council for the Church Overseas in an attempt to reach an agreed policy on a Millennium Appeal. Unfortunately, it was not possible to reach agreement on this project.

The CHIMPS project, "All God’s Children" (formulated by SAMS, MAM, Crosslinks, USPG and CMSI) has been given approval by Standing Committee as a Millennium Project of the Church of Ireland.

It is hoped that future projects which could be given endorsement by the Church of Ireland, will be brought to the attention of the Committee.
