25th Anniversary of Belfast Cathedral Sitout

Tomorrow (Sunday) afternoon the 25th anniversary of the Christmastide sit out for local charities, which was begun by the late Dean Sammy Crooks, will be marked in St Anne's Cathedral, Belfast, where the worship will be led by choirs from Grosvenor High School and Strandtown Primary School.

During the service the proceeds of last years sitout, which was the first for the present Dean of Belfast, Dr Houston McKelvey, will be distributed. Cheques, totalling £225,000, will be presented by the Bishop Elect of Connor, the Ven. Alan Harper, the Archdeacon of Down, the Ven. Gregor McCamley, Mrs Isobel Crooks, the widow of Dean Crooks, Lady McCollum and Mrs Gretta Rodgers, the Lady Mayoress of Belfast.

Mayors from several councils in County Antrim and County Down will receive cheques for charities in their areas as will the Lord Mayor of Belfast whose fund supports the elderly of the city. In addition £30,000 has been sent to Christian Aid, and three other international organizations, to help rebuild peoples' lives elsewhere in the needy world.

In the 25 years of the sitout over £2.4 million pounds has been raised.

Today (Saturday) is the Feast of Candlemas which brings the Christmas season to an end. In Christ Church Cathedral, Dublin the Candlemas Procession and Eucharist will begin at 5.00 pm while in Glenstall Abbey the curate of Limerick, the Revd Alan Matchett, will host an evening to "Meet, Sing and Eat". The Bishop of Cashel and Ossory, the Rt Revd John Neill, will be in Sweden where he is visiting the Diocese of Lund with which his dioceses are linked. In the Church of Ireland Theological College, Braemor Park, Dublin 14, the editorial board of Search will host a public lecture by Dr Stephen Sykes on "Power and Authority". Dr Sykes, who is a former Bishop of Ely, is presently Principal of Cramner Hall, Durham. The lecture begins at 2.30 pm.

In Dublin tomorrow (Sunday) morning Bishop Sykes will preach at the Sung Eucharist in Christ Church Cathedral while at the Sung Eucharist for Candlemas in the Chapel of Trinity College the Revd Dr Liam Tracey OSM, from Maynooth, will preach on "Faithfulness" as part of the "Virtues and Vices" series of lecture sermons. At 3.30 pm in St Ann's Church, Dawson Street, the Bach 2002 series of recitals continues with the Canzona Chamber Choir, the Orchestra of St Cecelia and guest soloists.

In St Brigid's Cathedral, Kildare, the preacher at the Patronal Festival Service will be the Dean of Limerick, the Very Revd Maurice Sirr.

On Monday the AGM of the Irish Church Missions will be held in All Saints' Centre, University Street, Belfast. The afternoon meeting will begin at 3.00 pm and the evening meeting at 7.30 pm.

Canon Roy Lawrence, from the Acorn Christian Healing Trust, will be speaking at a series of healing services in Belfast. Among his engagements will be the weekly healing services in St Ann's Cathedral on Monday evening and in St Finian's parish church, Cregagh, on Tuesday evening.

On Tuesday a new series of lunchtime lectures begins in Christ Church Cathedral, Dublin, as part of a "Tuesdays in Spring" series which has been organized in association with Dublin City Council. Each Tuesday in February there will be a lecture in Christ Church on the theme of "2000 Years of Christianity" and each Tuesday in March there will be a lecture in City Hall on the theme of "The Dublin City Treasures". The inaugural lecture of this spring series will be given by Dr Howard Clarke UCD, on "The Christianisation of the Dublin Vikings".
