Dean of Belfast to Preach in Dublin
At Evensong in St Patrick's Cathedral, Dublin, (Sunday)
the Dean of Belfast, Dr Houston McKelvey, will give the Lenten address
on the theme of "Transfiguration". As a former member of the
chapter, Dr McKelvey is no stranger to the pulpit of St Patrick's but
this will be the first occasion on which he has preached there since he
became Dean of Belfast in June of last year.
Before then he was Secretary to the General Synod
Board of Education (Northern Ireland) for almost twenty years and the
considerable energy which was evident in his tenure of that post is now
concentrated on St Anne's Cathedral. A new web site is being developed
for the cathedral, and although not yet complete, is available for
inspection. Sections on news and events, the cathedral prayer diary,
sermons, and a virtual tour are already operative.
That such a development is necessary is clear from
recently published statistics which reveal that Belfast Cathedral is the
second most visited free site in Belfast after City Hall. In excess of
22,000 visitors were attracted to St Anne's in 2001 and a tourism
development group from the Cathedral will shortly meet the City Council
committee responsible for tourist development in Belfast.
Belfast Cathedral will be the venue for the
consecration of the new Bishop of Connor, the Ven. Alan Harper, on 18
March.
Today (Saturday) from 10.00 am until 6.00 pm
the Rector of Julianstown, Co. Meath, the Ven. Patrick Lawrence, will
hold a gift day in St Mary's Church in support of the Parish Rooms
Building Fund. 300,000 euros have already been raised for this project
and a further 100,000 euros is needed. The development provides a
welcome conference facility in a convenient location between Dublin and
Belfast and the rector and churchwardens would welcome requests, from
outside the parish, for its use.
In Loughborough University the Dean of St Patrick's,
Dublin, Dr Robert MacCarthy, will address the East Midlands branch of
the TCD Association and tomorrow (Sunday) he will preach in
Southwell Minster. Tomorrow (Sunday) morning RTE will broadcast a
service of Sung Mattins from the Book of Common Prayer conducted
by the Revd Tom Gordon. Mr Tim Irvine, an ordinand in the Theological
College, will preach. The music will include settings by Farrant and
Gibbons and the hymns, from the Church Hymnal, will be nos 211
and 493. In the afternoon, at 3.30 pm, the final concert in the Bach
Cantatas 2002 series will be held in St Ann's Church, Dublin, while in
St Mary's Church, Leixlip, there will be a harpsichord recital by
Malcolm Proud.
On Tuesday the lunchtime historical lecture, in the
series organized by Christ Church Cathedral and Dublin City Council,
will be held in City Hall at 1.15 pm. The speaker will be the renowned
silver expert, Mr Douglas Bennett, who will speak on "The Dublin
City Regalia".
The Standing Committee of the General Synod and the
Representative Church Body will meet on Tuesday in Dublin where the
bishops will meet on Wednesday.
The speaker in the Lenten series, "Who is Jesus
Christ for us Today", in Monkstown parish church on Tuesday evening
will be the Bishop of Kilmore, the Rt Revd Kenneth Clarke, while on
Thursday evening, in Rathfarnham parish church, Fazel Ryklef, from the
Islamic Centre, will speak about Islam in the series of talks on
"Living Together in a Multi-Faith Society"
On Thursday evening in Richhill parish church the
Archbishop of Armagh, Dr Robin Eames, will institute the Revd David Coe
to the incumbency. Mr Coe has been Rector of Ballymacarrett in east
Belfast since 1989.
