Brabazon Trust Centenary Celebrations
To mark the centenary of the foundation of the
Brabazon Trust there will be a Service of Thanksgiving in St Patrick's
Cathedral, Dublin, tomorrow (Sunday) afternoon when the preacher
will be the Archbishop of Dublin.
Providing sheltered housing for the elderly in secure
and comfortable surroundings has been the primary objective of the
Brabazon Trust since its inception in 1902. Brabazon House, in
Sandymount, was built partly with funds provided by the Countess of
Meath and was given the Meath family name. The original building on
Gilford Road has been carefully maintained and extended while additional
modern blocks have been developed on the site. Almost 100 residents can
be accommodated in Sandymount and a further six places are available at
Brabazon Lodge in Clontarf.
Residents are provided with high quality
apartment-style and en-suite bed-sittingroom accommodation, dining
facilities and medical care from a qualified nursing staff. Not
surprisingly there is an extensive waiting list.
Throughout this year there will be a programme of
events to celebrate the centenary including a visit from President
McAleese in September.
Today (Saturday) the Bishop of Clogher, Dr
Michael Jackson, will be in Wales to represent the Church of Ireland at
the consecration of the Ven. Carl Cooper as Bishop of St David's. At the
meeting of the Church of Ireland Historical Society, in Armagh, The
Unharmonious Blacksmith, a study of Archbishop Richard Whately by
the Bishop of Meath and Kildare, will be launched. This evening, in St
Fin Barre's Cathedral, Cork, there will be a concert by the East Cork
Choral Society while in St Stephen's Church, Dublin, Voices of Musica
Sacra, from California, will give a recital in aid of church funds. In
St John's Church, Longford, the Girls' Friendly Society Diocesan Service
will be held. This year the GFS is celebrating its 125th anniversary and
many events are planned, culminating in a Service of Celebration in St
Patrick's Cathedral, Dublin next month.
Tomorrow (Sunday) RTE will broadcast Sung
Matins according to the Book of Common Prayer at which the
preacher will be the Rector of Zion, the Revd Wilbert Gourley. In the
Dublin parishes of Sandford and Milltown, where the rector is Canon
Desmond Harman, the preacher at the morning services will be the Bishop
of Tuam, Dr Richard Henderson, while in the Chapel of Trinity College,
Dublin, Ms Esther Addley, a journalist from The Guardian will
preach at the Sung Eucharist.
At the Eucharist in Christ Church Cathedral, Dublin,
Canon Richard Bertram will preach for the last time as a member of the
chapter. He was appointed as a canon of Christ Church in 1986 and, since
1995, has been Canon Treasurer. He will retire from the stipendiary
ministry at the end of June.
Tomorrow (Sunday) afternoon in Belfast
Cathedral, the Archbishop of Armagh will commission Mrs Paddy Wallace as
All-Ireland President of the Mothers' Union. Mrs Wallace has served the
Mothers' Union in various roles, most recently as Diocesan President for
Connor. She is a former teacher and is currently a member of the Church
of Ireland Marriage Council.
On Monday the Dean of Christ Church, Dublin, the Very
Revd John Paterson, will be in Kilkenny, at the invitation of the Bishop
of Cashel and Ossory, where he will address the younger clergy of the
dioceses on "The Spiritual Life of the Priest".
The Standing Committee of the General Synod and the
Executive Committee of the Repesentative Church Body will meet on
Tuesday in Church House, Dublin. On Wednesday and Thursday the bishops
will have a residential meeting in Dublin.
