GFS Celebrations

This year the Girls' Friendly Society is celebrating the 125th anniversary of its foundation. A number of diocesan festival services have already been held and there are more to come. Nationally the GFS will mark its 125th birthday with a Service of Celebration tomorrow (Sunday) afternoon in St Patrick's Cathedral, Dublin, where the preacher will be the Archbishop of Armagh.

The GFS was founded in London in 1875 by an Irishwoman, Mrs. Elizabeth Townsend, who wanted to help lonely girls who came from the county to work in the city. The Society was, and remains, dedicated to friendship and recreation in which all girls might share, bound together in a fellowship of Christian love and service.

The Girls' Friendly Society in Ireland is based at 36 Upper Leeson Street, Dublin 4, while the archives of GFS Ireland, from its foundation, have been deposited in the Representative Church Body Library.

Today (Saturday) Affirming Catholicism will hold "A Pilgrimage in the Anglican Tradition" to Lough Derg Island. The Crosslinks AGM will begin at 2.30 pm in Kill o' the Grange parish hall, Co. Dublin, where the programme will include activities for children. There will be parish fetes in Kilternan and Whitechurch, Co. Dublin, while in Knocknaree, Co. Wicklow, Mr. Harold Clarke will open his garden in support of Ballinatone parish church.

This evening (Saturday) the Choir of St Bartholomew's Church, Dublin, with Lyric FM presenter, Tim Thurston, will give a Concert of Popular Choral Music and Readings in Killiskey parish church, Co. Wicklow. The proceeds will be divided between Killiskey parish restoration fund and the Armagh Cathedral Choir Fund. In Cashel Cathedral there will be a concert with the Dean of Cashel and guests in aid of Chernobyl Children and the restoration of Cahir parish church.

Tomorrow (Saturday) the Friends of St Macartan's Cathedral, Clogher, will have their annual service and meeting in Clogher. Evensong will be sung by the Choir of St Peter's Church, Belfast, and the preacher will be the Bishop of Clogher, Dr Michael Jackson.

On Monday in Kilgarriffe parish Church, Clonakilty, the Cork, Cloyne and Ross Mothers' Union Diocesan Festival Service will be held. The Bishop of Cork will preside and the address will be given by the All Ireland President, Mrs. Paddy Wallace. In Monkstown parish church, Co. Dublin, the Jamestown College Choir from the USA will give a concert in support of the Church Building Fund.

On Tuesday the lunchtime history lecture in Christ Church Cathedral, Dublin, in the "2,000 Years of Christianity" series, will be given by Dr Jonathan Pierce, Irish School of Ecumenics, on "The 19th Century: Evolution and Reform". A Songs of Praise Concert in aid of cathedral funds will be held in St Patrick's Cathedral, Trim, on Tuesday evening while in Christ Church Cathedral, Dublin, the Cathedral Choir will be joined by Vokalensemble Cantabile Regensburg from Bavaria in a varied programme including works by William Byrd and Hugo Wolf. The Achill Choral Society from Ontario, Canada, are on tour in Ireland and next week they will give concerts in Killowen parish church, Coleraine, on Monday, in St Patrick's Cathedral, Armagh, on Wednesday and in Dundalk on Thursday.

On Wednesday evening at 6.30 pm David Leigh will give the fourth in the Willis Organ Centenary recitals in St Patrick's Cathedral, Dublin. He will give another recital after Evensong on Thursday when he will play Messiaen's Messe de la Pentecote.

On Friday at 8.00 pm the Rhode Island College Choir will give a recital in St Michan's Church, Dublin. All are welcome and tickets will be available at the door.
