Dean of Christ Church to Teach in America
Next month the Dean of Christ Church, Dublin, the
Very Revd John Paterson, will begin a four week residency at Nashotah
House, Wisconsin, where he will lead twenty-four sessions of study under
the general title "Profiles of the Giants in Anglican
Liturgy". He will take up the position of Visiting Professor in
Liturgics at the seminary's annual summer school. The summer courses at
Nashotah combine over a three year period to form a degree course.
Nashotah House is one of the oldest major seminaries
of the Episcopal Church in the United States and was founded in 1850 to
provide training for ministry in the Catholic Anglican tradition. Its
campus occupies a large site in rural Wisconsin about two hours
north-west of Chicago.
Today (Saturday) the 25th anniversary of the
ordination of Canon John Crawford, Vicar of the St Patrick's Cathedral
group of parishes, will be marked by a celebration of the Eucharist in
St Audeon's Church, Dublin, where the address will be given by the
former Bishop of Connor, the Rt Revd James Moore. In Christ Church
Cathedral Evensong for the Feast of St Peter will feature specially
edited choral music from the Tudor period using two Tudor organs. The
music will include settings by Byrd, Tomkins and Gibbons. The Bishop of
Derry and Raphoe will ordain to the diaconate Louise Crawford for the curacy of Drumragh and John Deane who will serve as an auxiliary deacon
in the diocese.
Tomorrow (Sunday) morning at 10.45 RTE will
broadcast a reflection in words and music by Canon Desmond Sinnamon,
Rector of Taney, and his wife Jennifer, on the theme of their recent
time in the Middle East. BBC Radio Ulster will broadcast Morning Prayer
and Litany from St John's Church, Newcastle, Co. Down, where the rector
is Canon Ian Ellis, editor of the Church of Ireland
Gazette. The
final ordinations for Petertide take place in Christ Church Cathedral
tomorrow (Sunday) afternoon when the Archbishop of Dublin will
raise four deacons to the priesthood - the Revd Sonia Gyles, curate of
Taney, Revd François Murenzi, curate of Bray, Revd Sandra Pragnell,
curate of Castleknock, and the Revd Olivia Williams, curate of
Greystones.
From Monday until next Sunday the services in St
Patrick's Cathedral, Dublin, will be sung by the Choir of Corpus Christi
College, Oxford. The Cathedral Choir begin a short visit to Paris on
Friday where they will sing at masses in the Basilica of Sacré Coeur in
Montmartre on Friday and Saturday. On Saturday morning they will give a
concert in Notre Dame and the trip will conclude with morning service
and a concert in the American Church.
On Wednesday at 2.45 pm the Annual Service of
Thanksgiving with Re-dedication of Intercessors of the Church's Ministry
of Healing will take place in St Michan's Church, Dublin, where the
address will be given by the Revd Andrew Orr, Rector of Castleknock.
Later, at 8.00 pm, the curate of Castleknock, the Revd Sandra Pragnell,
will celebrate the Eucharist for the first time, following her
ordination to the priesthood, at the Patronal Festival of St Thomas'
Church, Mulhuddart, which is part of the Castleknock union of parishes.
On Thursday the Archbishop of Armagh, Dr Robin Eames,
will be conferred with an honorary degree of Doctor of Laws by the
University of Ulster.
The Bishop of Cashel and Ossory has appointed Canon
Paul Mooney as Archdeacon of Ferns in succession to the Ven. Kenneth
Wilkinson who has retired from the stipendiary ministry. Archdeacon
Mooney has been Rector of New Ross since 1998 and was previously curate
of Galway.
