The Ordination and Consecration of the Revd John McDowell as a Bishop appointed to serve in the Diocese of Clogher, took place yesterday evening. The preacher at the service was The Rt Revd Suheil Dawani, Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Jerusalem. (The Diocese of Clogher has enjoyed close links with the Diocese of Jerusalem and the Middle East.)
Adding to the strong international presence at the service, the Porvoo Communion of Churches was represented by The Rt Revd Ingeborg Midttømme, Bishop of Møre, Church of Norway.
The Rt Revd John McDowell, born in Belfast in 1956, was educated at Annadale Grammar School, The Queen’s University of Belfast where he studied History, The London School of Economics where he studied Business Studies, and The University of Dublin where is studied Theology. Before studying for Orders, he worked in the Aerospace Industry and in lobbying as Assistant Director for the Confederation of British Industry.
Bishop McDowell was ordained in 1996 for the curacy of Antrim in the Diocese of Connor. From 1999-2002 he was rector of Ballyrashane and Kildollagh, also in the Diocese of Connor, and since 2002 he was rector St. Mark’s Dundela in the Diocese of Down. He has served as the Clerical Honorary Secretary for the Diocese of Down and since 2007, and has acted as one of the Clerical Honorary Secretaries of the Church of Ireland General Synod since 2009. He is married to Mary and they have one daughter Dorothy.
