In a new departure, St Patrick’s Cathedral, Dublin has arranged for services to be live streamed through the internet. Initially the two main Sunday services will be available each week though it is hoped to include Evensong on weekdays in the near future. The venture is to be launched this Sunday, 29th January 2012, when Evensong at 3.15pm will take the form of Britten’s ‘A Ceremony of Carols’ sung by the Cathedral Choristers accompanied by Dianne Marshall (Harp).
Many, through illness or for other reasons, who would wish to attend the sung services and cannot, are now able to participate in worship with the Cathedral congregation. By accessing the Cathedral’s website and simply selecting the option on the home page one can see and hear the services at 11.15 and 15.15 every Sunday free of charge.
The infrastructural work and installation was undertaken by ChurchservicesT.V. The Cathedral Administrator, Mr Gavan Woods, said, ‘St Patrick’s Cathedral has a vibrant tradition of sung worship which is now available for all to share across the world. All anyone needs is access to broadband and a computer. The idea of live streaming the services came about because it is seen as way to further the mission of the National Cathedral of the Church of Ireland and to bring its traditions and message to as wide a congregation as possible. The Dean, Mr Stuart Nicholson (organist), the choir and all in the music department are to be commended for their enthusiasm for this development and so allowing it to come to fruition.’
