Business Continues on Day One of General Synod 2023

 

The opening session of General Synod 2023 continues in Clayton White’s Hotel, Wexford. Archbishop of Armagh, the Most Revd John McDowell, welcomed members of Synod and the Synod’s ecumenical guests.

Guests this year include: Mr Frithjof Berndsen of the Lutheran Church in Ireland, Dr Damien Jackson of the Irish Council of Churches, the Revd Dr Tom Woolford of the Church of England, the Revd Dr Livingstone Thompson of the Moravian Church, the Revd David Nixon of the Methodist Church in Ireland, Mr Tom Wilson of the Methodist Church in Ireland, the Very Revd Dr Noble McNeely of the Presbyterian Church in Ireland, Dr Joan Back of the Catholic Church and the Most Revd Ger Nash of the Catholic Church.

The list of members of the Synod was laid on the table by Canon Malcolm Kingston. The Archbishop nominated Mr Lyndon McCann to be his assessor. Hon Sec, Canon Gillian Wharton, made a number of procedural announcements. Motion 1 on the timetable was proposed by Canon Wharton and passed.

The Revd David Nixon, was the first ecumenical guest to address Synod. He thanked members for their welcome. He thanked Archbishop John McDowell for his leadership in the Church of Ireland and in the Christian Church in Ireland for being so clear in speaking in the media and elevating the Christian faith. He thanked members of Synod, lay and ordained members of the Anglican church, for the work that they continued to do week by week to make such a difference on this island North and South as they sought to serve God. He asked God’s continued blessing on the work of the Church on this island.
