Day 2

Message of Congratulation to be Sent from Synod to King Charles

Message of Congratulation to be Sent from Synod to King Charles

A motion asking the Honorary Secretaries to send the congratulations of Synod to King Charles III on his accession to the throne and his recent coronation and extending prayerful good wishes to he and the Queen was passed by members of Synod today (Saturday May 13).

Proposing the motion the Revd Mark Lennox recalled the celebrations marking the Platinum Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II. He noted that just three months later they were mourning her passing.

“As you are aware, last weekend we celebrated the Coronation of King Charles III. Due to the length of the late Queen’s reign, unlike last year, all of us can now say we remember a Coronation. As we witnessed the historic event in Westminster Abbey, it was a delight to see the four main Churches on this island represented, with the Archbishop of Armagh having a role in the Coronation Service,” he said.

Seconding the motion, the Revd Peter Jones said that the celebration of the Jubilee and the passing of the Queen were two massive events that had profound impact on parishes. He said that more recently parishes could unite again to celebrate the coronation of King Charles III.

Speaking to the motion, Bishop Michael Burrows (Tuam Limerick and Killaloe) said he was more than happy to send prayers and congratulations to any new monarch. He asked if the Honorary Secretaries could express in the communication of Synod that it is from those who consider themselves loyal subjects and also from those who would consider themselves special respectful friends.

The Revd Ian Linton (Dromore) supported the motion and said he would like the idea of inviting a member of the Royal Family to address Synod to be put back on the agenda.
