The Revd Dr Daniel Nuzum, who serves as Secretary of the Church of Ireland’s Chaplaincy Accreditation Board, was recently commended with a Civic Award by Lord Mayor of Cork Deirdre Forde at an ceremony at Cork City Hall. These annual awards celebrate individuals and groups from across the Cork city who make a significant contribution to improve the community, with six people receiving the Lord Mayor’s Civic Awards in recognition of their efforts.

His Civic Award was presented for ‘an outstanding contribution to spiritual and pastoral care and education in perinatal bereavement and palliative care’.Daniel is a priest of the Diocese of Cork, Cloyne and Ross and serves as a healthcare chaplain at Cork University Hospital and Cork University Maternity Hospital. He is also a member of the Pastoral Care Team at Marymount University Hospital and Hospice working within the specialist palliative care service, an accredited Clinical Pastoral Education supervisor, and an active member of the Pregnancy Loss Research Group led by Professor Keelin O’Donoghue (at University College Cork and Cork University Maternity Hospital).

Speaking of the award, Daniel said: “It is a huge honour and a personal delight to see spiritual and pastoral care and education recognised in this way and also to highlight our care, research and education in perinatal bereavement and palliative care. These sensitive areas can be difficult for us to talk about as a society and so this public recognition gives voice to the experiences of parents and families at a very difficult time. I am hugely grateful to the wonderful people I work with, those who fund and inspire this work and care; and above all to those we care for.”
