Church of Ireland Notes from ‘The Irish Times’

Course in CITI

A total of 34 students will be in attendance for the third cycle of the ‘Certificate in Christian Theology and Practice’ which begins this weekend at the Church of Ireland Theological Institute. The programme,‘Fit for the Purpose’, takes as its theme a personal and biblical exploration of various matters to do with vocation. The lead facilitators are Dr Christina Baxter, former Principal of St John’s College Nottingham, and Canon Dr Maurice Elliott, Director of CITI. The group facilitators are the Revd Ruth Noble, the Revd Ken Rue, Mr Andrew Brannigan and Mr Andrew McNeile.

Students embarking on the certificate course fall into four different categories – those who may be considering selection towards stipendiary ministry training, those who have been selected for Ordained Local Ministry, those in training as Diocesan Readers, and those who simply wish to deepen their own understanding of the Christian faith. A brand new Christmas Carol, entitled ‘Sing Ye of Bethlehem’ will have a premiere at a special concert in St Peter’s church, Dunboyne, this evening at 7.30pm. The carol was written by Dunboyne resident, Conor Bowman. It will be performed by a specially formed Parish Pop–Up Choir made up of parishioners from Dunboyne and Rathmolyon parish and members of the St Peter’s National School community. A special School Choir made up of pupils from St Peter’s will also perform, along with the Sarah Bass singers who are based in the Oak Centre in Dunboyne. The series of lunchtimes lectures, sponsored by the Church of Ireland Centre at DCU,   concludes on Monday at 1.10pm in St Ann’s church, Dawson Street, where the Archbishop of Dublin and  the Revd Tom O’Brien  will talk about the ‘Future of the Chrich of Ireland’.

A ‘Lament towards Hope. will be held in St Patrick’s Cathedral, Dublin, on Monday at 7.00pm under the auspices of the Dublin City Interfaith Fellowship. Representatives of the main Christian denominations and some from other world religions represented in the city will be in attendance. The spoken work will be interspersed with musical interludes on the organ.

The annual Rokeby Lecture in the Armagh Robinson Library will be held on Thursday evening at 7.30pm. Professor Karen Corrigan, Director of Research in Linguistics in Newcastle University, will speak on ‘The Language of this country being always upon the Flux.. Swift and Sheridan as Guardians of English Nouns and Verbs’. Admission is free but booking at admin@armaghrobinsonlibrary.co.uk is essential.

Taney Parish Centre will host a Christmas Gala Flower Demonstration on Thursday from 8pm to 10pm. Admission is €15 at the door. Refreshments and Bumper Raffle will be available on the night.

Seven quilts from the South East Fermanagh Foundation are on temporary display in St Mary’s cathedral, Limerick. SEFF is committed to supporting innocent victim/survivors of The Troubles across the Republic of Ireland. Many of these families are represented on the Terrorism knows NO Borders quilt which includes  Irish Army, Garda and Prison Service personnel who were murdered, as well as civilians of all forms of violence Across the 7 memorial quilts which will be displayed, almost 500 innocents are remembered, ordinary yet extraordinary men, women and children from across the community and who were murdered/killed in Northern Ireland, the Republic of Ireland, Great Britain and mainland Europe.
