Bill Seeks to Ensure Consistency in Age Limits for Archdeacons

A Bill which seeks to align the age at which an archdeacon may retain office (currently 70 years of age) with the retirement age for clergy (currently 75 years of age) was proposed at General Synod in Armagh today (Friday May 10).

A Bill which seeks to align the age at which an archdeacon may retain office (currently 70 years of age) with the retirement age for clergy (currently 75 years of age) was proposed at General Synod in Armagh today (Friday May 10).

Proposed by Honorary Secretaries Hazel Corrigan and Ken Gibson, Bill No 3 seeks to address the anomaly in Chapter II of the Constitution.

Proposing the Bill Ms Corrigan said that the Bill arose from the Commission on Ministry’s discussions on the role and tenure of Archdeacons. She said there was no clear reason for the difference in age limits and the Bill aimed to ensure fairness and consistency for those who act as Archdeacons.

The Bill received its first and second readings and its third reading will be received when Synod meets online on Tuesday May 14.
