Braemor 15 Launched

In the Church of Ireland Theological Institute on  Monday evening the ;latest volume in the Braemor Studies series will be launched. From George Berkeley, to George Floyd, to George Nkenche: the Church of Ireland and Black Theology has been written bt the Revd Philip McKinley who is a curate in Dunboyne & Rathmoylon in the Diocese of Meath and curate in Kildare & Newbridge in the Diocese of Kildare. The book will be launched by the Revd Eileen Cremin, formerly Rector of Fermoy in the Diocese of Cloyne.

The Braemor Studies series is an initiative of the General Synod’s Literature Committee, which is chaired by Dr Kennth Milne. At one of its periodic think ins the Committee noted that while there was significant publishing from  a Church of Ireland perspective in church history and liturgy there was little from a theological perspective. In the newly configured ministerial training programme in the Church of Ireland Theological Institute there was a requirement for third year ordinands to write a dissertation on a topic of applied theology and so it was suggested to CITI that the best dissertation each year should be published. The Institute readily agreed to this proposal and set up a system whereby the Institute; s examiners would select a title which the Literature Committee would then arrange to be published by Church of Ireland Publishing.

Mr McKinley’s book is the fifteenth in the aeries and will be available form the on–lone book store of the Church of Ireland website, form the Book Well in Belfast and from CITI.

Tomorrow  (Sunday) at 12:45pm, Vincenzo Delli Noci will visit St Ann’s church, Dublin, from Italy and perform Chopin Ballades and on Thursday at 1.20pm there will be a piano recital by Justine Gormley.

In St Fin Barre’s cathedral on Monday, the Feast of the Annunciation (transferred), will be marked by a celebration of the Eucharist of the Feast at noon followed by the planting of an oak tree in the Cathedral grounds to mark the silver jubilee of Dr Paul, Colton as Bishop of Cork.

On Thursday evening the Archbishop of Dublin will attend a reception for the Revd Steve Brunn as he concludes is role as Church of Ireland Chaplain to Trinity College. Mr Brunn has been appointed as Rector of Dun Laoghaire.

One hundred years ago, a new system of courts was created in Ireland. The Courts of Justice Act was signed into law on 12 April 1924, and was one of the most significant pieces of legislation passed in the Free State. The centenary will be marked on 12 April 2024, next Friday, by a special event at Dublin Castle, the venue of the first sittings of the new courts.

Among the speakers will be the Revd Robert D. Marshall, the Dublin Provincial and Diocesan Registrar, who will speak on ‘A Balanced Judiciary: the Early Appointments to the Superior and Circuit Courts’.

On Friday evening in St Mary’s church, Blessington, at 8pm, the Archbishop of Dublin will Institute the Revd Niall Stratford as Rector of the Blessington union of parishes which consists of Blessington, Kilbride, Ballymore Eustace and Hollywood. Mr Stratford has been serving as a Non Stipendiary Minister  in the parishes of Irishtown and Donnybrook since 2021. In a curious twist of fate the current Rector of Irish & Donnybrook, Canon Leonard Ruddock, was the previous Rector of Blessington.

The Spring meeting of the Church of Ireland Historical Society will be held in Armagh on 27 April – details to follow.
