Photo Competition

This year’s Communications Competition, run by the Central Communications Board in the lead–up to General Synod, is now open and invites entries for photographs on the theme of ‘Seeds of Hope’.

The competition will run until 5.00pm on 23rd April and applicants should email the Church of Ireland Press Office – at pressoffice@rcbcoi.org for an entry form, and then send a photo of their choice to the same email address. If you wish to request a printed application form and submit a photo by post, please write to Church of Ireland Press Office, Floor 2, 18–22 Hill Street, Belfast, BT1 2LA.

Winners will be announced at this year’s General Synod, which will take place in person in Armagh on 10 & 11 May.  The CCB alternates the scope of its competitions each year between print, photography and online media.

Bishop Pat Storey, who chairs the CCB, remarked: ‘As we look at the world around us, we all long to have hope that things will turn out well for those closest to us and others in need who may live further away.  So let’s see how scenes that picture this sense of hope, even in its earliest beginnings, can give us a chance to be creative and encourage others in our walk of faith’.

In St Ann’s church on Dublin’s Dawson Street there will be recital tomorrow (Sunday) at 12:45pm when Kalle Peura and Natalia Jaworek will perform Enescu’s Violin Sonata.

This year marks the 300th anniversary of the first performance of J.S. Bach’s Saint John’s Passion. To mark the occasion the Cathedral Choir and Orchestra of St Patrick’s cathedral , Dublin, will give a liturgical performance of the work tomorrow (Sunday) at 6pm. The service, which will be live streamed, will last approximately two hours.

On Monday at 6pm, in Christ Church cathedral, Dublin, the Cathedral Organists will give a recital on the theme of Holy Week. Taking the listener from Jesus’s entry into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday up to his Crucifixion, this recital will feature some of the most expressive and poignant music in the organ repertoire and is a chance to reflect and meditate as we approach Good Friday. Entry to the recital is free, a retiring collection will support the work of the Music Department.

On  Wednesday evening at 7.30pm in St Philip’s church, Temple Road, Dartry,  Johannes Brahms’ Chorale Preludes, Op. 122 will be performed by David O’Shea (organ) with chorales sung by members of the Sandford and St Philip’s Choral .Union. Admission will be free with a retiring collection in aid of Shine a Light for Al–Ahli Hospital (Gaza) Appeal

A parishioner from the Diocese of Clogher will be among the 150 recipients of Maundy Money at this year’s Maundy Thursday Service in Worcester Cathedral.  Mrs Ethne McCord is the nominee from Clogher Diocese to receive Maundy Money at this year’s service. She is a parishioner of St. Salvator’s church, Glaslough, in the Donagh group of parishes which also includes Tyholland with Errigal Truagh in Co, Monaghan.

The Annual General Meeting of the Church Education Society will be held on Thursday, 11th April 2024, at 3.30pm via zoom.

The Revd Prof Anne Lodge has been appointed a Canon of Christ Church cathedral, Dublin. Prof Lodge is a Self–Supporting Minister and serves as Priest Scholar of Christ Church. She is also Director of the Church of Ireland Centre in the DCU Institute of Education. Prof Lodge’s appointment comes following the retirement of Canon Aisling Shine last year.
