REBINDING OF DONNYBROOK PARISH REGISTERS

One of the tragic consequences of Hurricane Charlie in August 1986 was the inundation of St Mary’s church, Donnybrook, and the saturation of the parish records which were stored in the vestry. Insurance cover permitted only a partial conservation of the records at the time . The two oldest registers of baptisms, marriages and burials, covering the years 1712 to 1880, and four vestry minutes books for the period 1825 to 1965, were cleaned, stabilised and boxed. Now, with the assistance of a grant from the Heritage Council, these records have been handsomely rebound by Antiquarian Bookcrafts of Marley Craft Courtyard, Rathfarnham, and are again available to researchers in the Representative Church Body Library.

The photographs show Cathal O’Grady, a bookbinder with Antiquarian Bookcrafts, and Dr Susan Hood, assistant librarian and archivist in the RCB Library, with the rebound records.
