RCB Library Notes
Cork Manuscript Deposited in RCB Library
Mr Patrick Quinn, from Co. Galway has, through the good offices of the National Museum of Ireland, deposited on indefinite loan in the RCB Library, a notebook of the renowned Cork antiquary, Richard Caulfield (1823-87), who was Librarian of Queen’s College, Cork. Mr Quin, who acquired the manuscript, most generously agreed that it should be placed in the RCB Library.
Sample of annotated text by Richard Caulfield from his notebook transcript of the earliest register from Holy Trinity parish, Cork, in which he records that he completed the task at ‘exactly 12 o’clock noon’ on Saturday 10 July 1858. |
The notebook contains a copy of a 17th century account book of the parish of Holy Trinity (Christ Church), Cork, together with copies of entries from the Holy Trinity register of baptisms, marriages and burials for the years 1643 to 1669. The Holy Trinity parish records were transferred to the RCB Library in 1995 and the deposit of this manuscript complements that transfer. Moreover the Library already holds a number of Caulfield’s books of transcriptions of Cork parish records and this new deposit will be a welcome addition to them.
The Representative Church Body Library is, inter alia, the Church of Ireland’s repository for its archives and manuscripts and it welcomes offers of manuscript material relating to the Church of Ireland. The Library has published the earliest register of this parish, with a comprehensive index, as part its publishing programme:
