Standing Committee News - January 2006

The Standing Committee of the General Synod met on Tuesday 24 January 2006.

Child Poverty Forum
The Archbishop of Armagh, Dr Robin Eames, reported on the Child Poverty Forum held in Dromantine (near Newry) in December 2005. Much interest was generated in the forum and the Archbishop reported that he had established a working group to continue to plan the way forward and keep the momentum going.

Appointments
Archdeacon Patrick Rooke has been co-opted to the Standing Committee to fill the vacancy among the co-opted members caused by the non-election to the General Synod of Mr H W Young. Archdeacon Rooke is Incumbent of Agherton parish and Archdeacon of Dalriada (Connor). He is also Chairman of the Hard Gospel Committee.

Mr H R J Totten has been appointed Chairman of the Priorities Fund Committee in succession to Mr H W Young.

Safeguarding Trust
The Standing Committee agreed that a Bill, to create an effective legal standing for Safeguarding Trust by the addition of a new chapter in the Constitution entitled .Ministry to Children?, be submitted to the General Synod of 2006 on behalf of the Standing Committee.

Anglican Roman Catholic International Commission
The Standing Committee received and discussed the Committee for Christian Unity?s response to the ARCIC document, Mary: Grace and Hope in Christ. In March the Standing Committee will receive a revised response for appending to its report to General Synod.

General Synod Royalties Fund
The Standing Committee agreed that a grant of £700 from the General Synod Royalties Fund be made to the Church of Ireland Historical Society to subvent the publication, by Four Courts Press, of a book of essays entitled The Clergy of the Church of Ireland, to be edited by Canon W G Neely (Convenor of the Church of Ireland Historical Society) and Dr Toby Barnard (Fellow of Hertford College, Oxford) conditional on the Church of Ireland Historical Society raising matching funds.

The Standing Committee also agreed that a grant of £350 be made to the Church of Ireland Historical Society to subvent the publication of A Study of Archbishop McCann written by the Rt Revd R A Warke, subject to the Historical Society raising matching funds.

Hard Gospel
The Standing Committee invited the Revd Earl Storey, Director of the Hard Gospel Project, to report the projects progress. A wide ranging discussion followed.

Eastern Orthodox ? Porvoo Consultation
The Standing Committee received a report from the Rt Revd Michael Jackson, Bishop of Clogher, on the Eastern Orthodox-Porvoo Consultation held in Jarvenpaa, Finland in December 2005.
