Statement by Archbishop Michael Jackson following the death of Seamus Mallon

The death of Seamus Mallon was announced on Friday 24 January 2020.

Speaking on Friday evening, Archbishop Michael Jackson said: ‘It is with deep sadness this evening that I have learned of the death of former Northern Ireland Deputy First Minister and former Deputy Leader of the SDLP, Seamus Mallon.

‘Mr Mallon was a man who was renowned for his great courage in political life, his tireless commitment to community and his integrity in speaking out against those who encouraged and were involved in violence. At all times he had the well–being of Ireland, North and South, at heart.

‘Our sympathies lie with his daughter Órla and members of his wider family.’
