The Bishops of the Church of Ireland are unanimously of the view that all Church of Ireland funerals should take place at the graveside only until further notice. Funeral services should no longer be held in churches or church buildings. Each bishop has communicated this advice within his or her own diocese.
It is important that this advice, which is firm in reflecting the current public health situation, is acted on with all pastoral sensitivity; funeral services at crematoria should operate within all specific regulations. A full service of thanksgiving for the life of the loved one (should the family wish to have one) will be possible as soon as is practicable, when the current civil restrictions are lifted. This guidance is subject to further approval or other advice that may be considered appropriate by the diocesan bishop.
