The Word of God
A Psalm
Psalm 78: 32-55
32But for all this, they | sinned yet | more ■
and put no | faith in his | wonderful | works.
33So he brought their days to an end | like a | breath ■
and their | years in | sudden | terror.
34Whenever he slew them, | they would | seek him; ■
they would repent and | earnestly | search for | God.
35They remembered that | God•was their | rock ■
and the | Most High | God•their re | deemer.
36Yet they did but flatter him | with their | mouth ■
and dis | sembled | with their | tongue.
37Their heart was not | steadfast to | wards him, ■
neither were they | faithful | to his | covenant.
38But he was so merciful that he forgave their misdeeds and did | not des | troy them; ■
many a time he turned back his wrath and did not suffer his whole dis | pleasure | to be | roused.
39For he remembered that they | were but | flesh, ■
a wind that passes | by and | does not re | turn.
40How often they rebelled against him | in the | wilderness ■
and | grieved him | in the | desert!
41Again and again they | tempted | God ■
and provoked the | Holy | One of | Israel.
42They did not re | member his | power ■
in the day when he re | deemed them | from the | enemy;
43How he had wrought his | signs in | Egypt ■
and his | wonders•in the | field of | Zoan.
44He turned their | rivers•into | blood, ■
so that they | could not | drink of their | streams.
45He sent swarms of flies among them, | which de | voured them, ■
and | frogs which | brought them | ruin.
46He gave their | produce•to the | caterpillar, ■
the | fruit of their | toil•to the | locust.
47He destroyed their | vines with | hailstones ■
and their | sycomore | trees•with the | frost.
48He delivered their | cattle to | hailstones ■
and their | flocks | – to | thunderbolts.
49He set loose on them his | blazing | anger: ■
fury, displeasure and trouble, a | troop of des | troying | angels.
50He made a way for his anger and spared not their | souls from | death, ■
but gave their life | over | to the | pestilence.
51He smote the | firstborn of | Egypt, ■
the first fruits of their | strength•in the | tents of | Ham.
52But he led out his | people like | sheep ■
and guided them in the | wilderness | like a | flock.
53He led them to safety and they were | not a | fraid, ■
but the | sea•over | whelmed their | enemies.
54He brought them to his | holy | place, ■
the mountain which his | right hand | took•in pos | session.
55He drove out the nations before them and shared out to them | their in | heritance; ■
he settled the tribes of | Israel | in their | tents.
A Canticle
Which may be said here or between the readings
The Song of Wisdom
1 Wisdom is the brightness of eternal light,
the spotless mirror of God’s power at work,
the image of God’s goodness.
2 Wisdom is but one, yet she can do all things;
herself unchanging, she makes all things new.
3 Age after age, she enters holy souls
and makes them friends of God, and prophets,
beloved of God as her companions.
4 Wisdom is more beautiful than the sun,
surpassing every constellation of the stars.
5 Her radiance is greater than the light of day;
for day’s light is followed by the night.
6 Against wisdom no evil can prevail;
she reaches mightily from one end of the earth to the other,
and orders all things well.
Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit
As it was in the beginning is now and shall be forever. Amen
One or two readings
The Gospel Canticle
Benedictus
1 Blessèd be the Lord the God of Israel,
who has come to his people and set them free.
2 The Lord has raised up for us a mighty saviour,
born of the house of his servant David.
3 Through the holy prophets God promised of old
to save us from our enemies,
from the hands of those who hate us,
4 to show mercy to our forebears,
and to remember his holy covenant.
5 This was the oath God swore to our father Abraham:
to set us free from the hand of our enemies.
6 Free to worship him without fear,
holy and righteous before him all the days of our life.
7 And you, child, shall be called the prophet of the Most High,
for you will go before the Lord to prepare his way,
8 To give his people knowledge of salvation
by the forgiveness of all their sins.
9 In the tender compassion of our God
the dawn from on high shall break upon us.
10 To shine on those who dwell in darkness
and the shadow of death,
and to guide our feet into the way of peace.
Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit
As it was in the beginning is now and shall be forever. Amen
The Apostles’ Creed
May be said
I believe in God, the Father almighty,
creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died and was buried;
he descended to the dead.
On the third day he rose again;
he ascended into heaven,
he is seated at the right hand of the Father,
and he will come again to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic Church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting. Amen.

The Collect of the Day
Almighty God,
who built your Church upon the foundation
of the apostles and prophets
with Jesus Christ himself as the chief corner-stone:
So join us together in unity of spirit by their doctrine
that we may be made a holy temple acceptable to you;
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Alternative collects
O God, the author of peace and lover of concord,
to know you is eternal life, and to serve you is perfect freedom:
Defend us in all assaults of our enemies,
that we, surely trusting in your protection,
may not fear the power of any adversaries;
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.
O Lord, our heavenly Father, almighty and everliving God,
we give you thanks for bringing us safely to this day:
Keep us from falling into sin or running into danger,
and in all things guide us to know and do your will;
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.
Go before us, Lord, in all our doings, with your most gracious favour,
and further us with your continual help;
that in all our works begun, continued and ended in you,
we may glorify your holy name,
and finally by your mercy attain everlasting life;
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.
Heavenly Father,
in whom we live and move and have our being:
We humbly pray that your Holy Spirit may so guide and govern us
that in all the cares and occupations of our daily life,
we may never forget your presence
but may remember that we are always walking in your sight,
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.
The Lord’s Prayer
Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins
as we forgive those who sin against us.
Lead us not into temptation
but deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours
now and for ever. Amen.
Going out as God’s people
The Lord be with you
All and also with you.
Let us bless the Lord.
All Thanks be to God.
The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God,
and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, be with us all evermore.
All Amen
To the King of Ages, immortal, invisible, the only God
be honour and glory for ever and ever.
All Amen

fill you with all joy and peace in believing,
so that by the Holy Spirit
you may abound in hope.
All Amen
