The Word of God
A Psalm
Psalm 28
1To you I call, O Lord my rock; be not | deaf•to my | cry, ■
lest, if you do not hear me, I become like | those who go | down•to the | Pit.
2Hear the voice of my prayer when I cry | out to | you, ■
when I lift up my | hands•to your | holy of | holies.
3Do not snatch me away with the wicked, with the | evil | doers, ■
who speak peaceably with their neighbours, while | malice is | in their | hearts.
4Repay them ac | cording•to their | deeds ■
and according to the | wickedness of | their de | vices.
5Reward them according to the | work of their | hands ■
and | pay them their | just de | serts.
6They take no heed of the Lord’s doings, nor of the | works of his | hands; ■
therefore shall he break them down | and not | build them | up.
7Blessed | be the | Lord, ■
for he has | heard the | voice of my | prayer.
8The Lord is my strength | and my | shield; ■
my heart has trusted in | him and | I am | helped;
9Therefore my heart | dances for | joy ■
and in my | song | will I | praise him.
10The Lord is the | strength of his | people, ■
a safe | refuge for | his a | nointed.
11Save your people and | bless your in | heritance; ■
shepherd them and | carry | them for | ever.
Psalm 29
1Ascribe to the Lord, you | powers of | heaven, ■
ascribe to the | Lord | glory and | strength.
2Ascribe to the Lord the honour | due•to his | name; ■
worship the | Lord•in the | beauty of | holiness.
3The voice of the Lord is upon the waters; the God of | glory | thunders; ■
the Lord is up | on the | mighty | waters.
4The voice of the Lord is mighty in | oper | ation; ■
the voice of the Lord | is a | glorious | voice.
5The voice of the Lord | breaks the | cedar trees; ■
the Lord | breaks the | cedars of | Lebanon;
6He makes Lebanon | skip•like a | calf ■
and Sirion | like a | young wild | ox.
7The voice of the Lord splits the flash of lightning; the voice of the Lord | shakes the | wilderness; ■
the Lord | shakes the | wilderness of | Kadesh.
8The voice of the Lord makes the oak trees writhe and strips the | forests | bare; ■
in his | temple | all cry, | ‘Glory!’
9The Lord sits enthroned a | bove the | water flood; ■
the Lord sits enthroned as | king for | ever | more.
10The Lord shall give | strength to his | people; ■
the Lord shall give his | people the | blessing of | peace.
A Canticle
Which may be said here or between the readings
The Song of Wisdom
1 Wisdom is the brightness of eternal light,
the spotless mirror of God’s power at work,
the image of God’s goodness.
2 Wisdom is but one, yet she can do all things;
herself unchanging, she makes all things new.
3 Age after age, she enters holy souls
and makes them friends of God, and prophets,
beloved of God as her companions.
4 Wisdom is more beautiful than the sun,
surpassing every constellation of the stars.
5 Her radiance is greater than the light of day;
for day’s light is followed by the night.
6 Against wisdom no evil can prevail;
she reaches mightily from one end of the earth to the other,
and orders all things well.
Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit
As it was in the beginning is now and shall be forever. Amen
One or two readings
The Gospel Canticle
Benedictus
1 Blessèd be the Lord the God of Israel,
who has come to his people and set them free.
2 The Lord has raised up for us a mighty saviour,
born of the house of his servant David.
3 Through the holy prophets God promised of old
to save us from our enemies,
from the hands of those who hate us,
4 to show mercy to our forebears,
and to remember his holy covenant.
5 This was the oath God swore to our father Abraham:
to set us free from the hand of our enemies.
6 Free to worship him without fear,
holy and righteous before him all the days of our life.
7 And you, child, shall be called the prophet of the Most High,
for you will go before the Lord to prepare his way,
8 To give his people knowledge of salvation
by the forgiveness of all their sins.
9 In the tender compassion of our God
the dawn from on high shall break upon us.
10 To shine on those who dwell in darkness
and the shadow of death,
and to guide our feet into the way of peace.
Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit
As it was in the beginning is now and shall be forever. Amen
The Apostles’ Creed
May be said
I believe in God, the Father almighty,
creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died and was buried;
he descended to the dead.
On the third day he rose again;
he ascended into heaven,
he is seated at the right hand of the Father,
and he will come again to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic Church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting. Amen.
Prayer
Kneel

Eternal God, we give thanks
for the triumphs of the gospel that herald your salvation,
the signs of renewal that declare the coming of your kingdom,
the examples of human lives that reveal your work of grace ...

Even so, come Lord Jesus. Amen.
The Collect of the Day
Lord God,
your Spirit guided Philip the deacon
to show how ancient prophecies are fulfilled in Jesus Christ:
Open our minds to understand the Scriptures,
and deepen our faith in him;
who is alive and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever.
Alternative collects
O God, the author of peace and lover of concord,
to know you is eternal life, and to serve you is perfect freedom:
Defend us in all assaults of our enemies,
that we, surely trusting in your protection,
may not fear the power of any adversaries;
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.
O Lord, our heavenly Father, almighty and everliving God,
we give you thanks for bringing us safely to this day:
Keep us from falling into sin or running into danger,
and in all things guide us to know and do your will;
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.
Go before us, Lord, in all our doings, with your most gracious favour,
and further us with your continual help;
that in all our works begun, continued and ended in you,
we may glorify your holy name,
and finally by your mercy attain everlasting life;
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.
Heavenly Father,
in whom we live and move and have our being:
We humbly pray that your Holy Spirit may so guide and govern us
that in all the cares and occupations of our daily life,
we may never forget your presence
but may remember that we are always walking in your sight,
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.
The Lord’s Prayer
Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins
as we forgive those who sin against us.
Lead us not into temptation
but deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours
now and for ever. Amen.
Going out as God’s people
The Lord be with you
All and also with you.
Let us bless the Lord.
All Thanks be to God.
The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God,
and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, be with us all evermore.
All Amen
To the King of Ages, immortal, invisible, the only God
be honour and glory for ever and ever.
All Amen
May the God of hope
fill you with all joy and peace in believing,
so that by the Holy Spirit
you may abound in hope.
All Amen
